General description of the collection: The Louisiana militia documents collection includes unit reports, orders and other documents; text of newspaper articles; personnel letters; diaries; and a report were researched and organized under a project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) the direction of R.L. Murphy from 1936-1940. Biographical information on military and political personnel as well as unit organization is found. Reproduced unit circulars, orders, and reports contain information on changes in uniform items, unit organizational structure, and the election of officers; newspaper accounts of participation in individual and group drill and shooting competitions; conduct of ceremonial functions; and participation in special events are included. Three events of note are escorting an exhibition of the Liberty Bell in 1884, an excursion to the 1891 Chicago's World Fair, and a delegation to the 50th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg in 1913.
